People of Barre - As of the census of 2000, there were 9,291 people, 4,220 households, and 2,253 families residing in the city. The population density was 892.4/km² (2,309.4/mi²). There were 4,477 housing units at an average density of 430.0/km² (1,112.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 97.40% White, 0.48% Black or African American, 0.38% Native American, 0.52% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.32% from other races, and 0.89% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.68% of the population.

There were 4,220 households out of which 26.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 37.0% were married couples living together, 12.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 46.6% were non-families. 39.2% of all households were made up of individuals and 16.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.14 and the average family size was 2.86.

In the city the population was spread out with 22.4% under the age of 18, 7.9% from 18 to 24, 29.5% from 25 to 44, 22.0% from 45 to 64, and 18.1% who were 65 years of age or older.
