History
The village was founded in 1804, five years before
1809 when Sullivan County, New York came into being,
incorporated in 1830. The founders, John P. Jones and
Samuel F. Jones, admirers of Thomas Jefferson, named
the village after his Virginia home, Monticello.

of 2000, there are 6,512 people, 2,554 households, and
1,460 families residing in the village. The population
density is 617.8/km² (1,601.5/mi²). There
are 3,758 housing units at an average density of 356.5/km²
(924.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the village is
55.57% White, 29.32% African American, 0.31% Native
American, 2.13% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 8.14%
from other races, and 4.48% from two or more races.
23.16% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any
race.
There are 2,554 households out of which 31.7% have
children under the age of 18 living with them, 29.9%
are married couples living together, 21.8% have a female
householder with no husband present, and 42.8% are non-families.
36.1% of all households are made up of individuals and
13.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age
or older. The average household size is 2.39 and the
average family size is 3.14.
In the village the population is spread out with 28.3%
under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 27.5% from
25 to 44, 22.8% from 45 to 64, and 12.7% who are 65
years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For
every 100 females there are 95.2 males. For every 100
females age 18 and over, there are 90.5 males.
